Ideology is what divides us, and it doesn't actually contribue to our society. Just a bunch of ambiguous "values" people fell like they're holding up.

I think ideology is important because it helps us understand what our goals are and what we're trying to accomplish.

It helps us define what Conservative and Liberal actually mean. Otherwise then it's just stereotypes.

No thats the problem. Ideology promotes stereotypes. What do you think of when you picture someone who wants to drugs?

I don't see your point little. But I will say that ideologies do no good when it comes to actually drafting legislation. Thats what I think Tea Partiers and young Obamamaniacs don't understand.

I care greatly about Ideology, people die and live because of it, I am not defending all types, but I wake with one and go to sleep thinking the complete opposite some days, so understanding them if not believing in them is very important.

I think they are important on a general basis, but you can't draft legislation or make a decision on a specific bill just by having a type of ideology. I know some conservatives who want to maintain a smaller government, but that doesn't mean they sometimes don't think taxes need to be raised.

Maybe the term Ideology is confused with vision, as you need to be a visionary to believe you have something to offer to the electorate, the ideology is more of a mission statement to the organisation that you lend yourself too.
so you could believe in low taxes as an idealogical goal but also have the vision to want tax to raise money for another cause.

It all depends on what kind of ideology we are talking about...
Are we talking about party ideology? Political parties are just a way to 'water down' the views of more radical people. Why do you think we only have 2 parties that bicker over relatively small issues (when compared to issues in other parts of the world)? If you look at the grander scheme, a global scheme, that Democrats and Republicans don't differ on much especially when you look at the division between parties in some of the countries in Europe. The reason-- stability. When everyone belongs to two 'polar' groups that don't differentiate much, then not much is going to change when parties shift...
Now, if we are talking about governing ideology in the sense of deontology v utilitarianism, or isolationism v globalization... now that's the important stuff! And that's the stuff that doesn't tow a party line.
